Apparently, the Republican Party is all about Joe Six Pack and Joe the Plumber, but doesn’t really give a shit about Joe the Auto Worker. Opposition to the proposed GM bailout is coming mostly from the Republican congress, and while I’m not convinced that a bailout is the 100% necessary step, I’m also a little confused as to why now the common thinking is “bailout just delays the problem.” The exact same argument could easily have been made for the wallstreet bailout. As Businessweek puts it:
“GM is twisting in the breeze, saying it won’t make it through year end without help, but the Bush administration, which has been liberal with aid to anyone who can pretend to be remotely connected to the financial system, has been consistently tightfisted about helping anyone who probably didn’t vote Republican, such as auto-workers and people who lost their homes”
