Michael Lewis does a great job of explaining how we got into this mess.
“I thought I was writing a period piece about the 1980s in America. Not for a moment did I suspect that the financial 1980s would last two full decades longer or that the difference in degree between Wall Street and ordinary life would swell into a difference in kind. “
Apparently your ruminations on “reigning in the growth of government” — which you clearly have a comprehensive plan on how to do — are best delivered whilst killing fowl.
CNN put it mildly. I’m going to put it bluntly. We are in the middle of the worst crisis since the great depression and MY administration, who I PAY to work for me, is not saying sh*t. Where is Dick Cheney? Where is our PRESIDENT? What a bunch of complete failures these guys are. Service? HA!
ok, i appreciate that a lot of the hatred of the US in the islamic world comes from our draconian oil-driven policies, but, to be honest, these guys are just nuts.
“if this country hadn’t redefined marriage, black people still couldn’t marry white people. Sixteen states had laws on the books that made that illegal in 1967. The parents of the President Elect of the United States could not have married in nearly one third of the states of the country their son grew up to lead.”
Apparently, the Republican Party is all about Joe Six Pack and Joe the Plumber, but doesn’t really give a shit about Joe the Auto Worker. Opposition to the proposed GM bailout is coming mostly from the Republican congress, and while I’m not convinced that a bailout is the 100% necessary step, I’m also a little confused as to why now the common thinking is “bailout just delays the problem.” The exact same argument could easily have been made for the wallstreet bailout. As Businessweek puts it:
“GM is twisting in the breeze, saying it won’t make it through year end without help, but the Bush administration, which has been liberal with aid to anyone who can pretend to be remotely connected to the financial system, has been consistently tightfisted about helping anyone who probably didn’t vote Republican, such as auto-workers and people who lost their homes”
always good form to taunt a Nobel Peace Prize winner and say you’re looking forward to his death. Though I guess come to think of it I did once say that I’d throw a party when Henry Kissinger dies. But this is, y’know, different. Jerks.
Taking a little break from American politics here. For those who don’t know, there is a lot going on between China and Tibet right now. The Chinese government has predictably and finally stated that the Dalai Lama’s attempts to reasonably negotiate for his homeland’s future are dead, the Dalai Lama has publicly stated that his conciliatory policy has failed, and Tibetans-in-exile are meeting in Dharamsala India to figure out what to do next. For those unfamiliar with the situation, this is a rather heady article that’s probably not a good intro to the situation. For those who know whats up, please ponder. Here it is.
“Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told CNN today that she would be honored to help President-elect Barack Obama in his new administration if asked, even if he did once hang around with an “unrepentant domestic terrorist.”
