This is so well-written, and it scares me to death. A few weeks ago, I was picking out books for a 10 year old family member, and my republican relative said to me, "Be careful, we don't want her reading what you did - she'll grow up with your ideals." I am the first in my family to be college educated, and am currently attending graduate school.
I cannot understand why anyone wouldn't want their children to be better educated then they are, but it is scary, and its becoming more frequent.

Proof that you are on the mark are reports that after some of the recent attacks from the podium by McCain/Palin from the crowd have been heard racial epithets and at least one time, "kill him" referring to Obama.

I've been a single parent "hockey Dad" and I'm also an unabashed intellectual and unabashed liberal. We have to speak up and show that this name calling is transparently a bunch of bullshit. This downward spiral against intellectualism has to be fought at every instance. This includes pointing it out like this post and calling it what it is. It also means pointing out that McCain and Palin are the real elitists and no amount of them pointing fingers should distract us from that fact. They think they know better than everyone else and cynically try to manipulate us all so a very few (elite) can benefit from the hard work of the rest of us.

We used to have working class intellectuals and people were proud of being called that. If there is no money for education, libraries, etc, it ain't goin to happen.

It also means that we need to not be snobs ourselves and show respect for everyone and work with everyone. There is plenty of work to be done, let's do it.
